Hyenas

1992 — Djibril Diop Mambety — Senegal, Switzerland, France

feature · comedy, drama, satire · video-wave

Adapted from Friedrich Durrenmatt's play The Visit, Hyenas follows a wealthy woman who returns to her home village and offers its residents a fortune in exchange for killing the man who abandoned her decades earlier, using the story as a satire of Senegal's post-colonial economy bending to Western money.

Fun fact: The score was composed by Mambety's own brother, Wasis Diop, and it was Mambety's second and final full-length feature.

Notes: Set in Colobane, Mambety's own hometown; Senegal/Switzerland/France co-production.
