Keita! L'Heritage du griot

1995 — Dani Kouyate — Burkina Faso, France

feature · drama, family, fantasy · video-wave

A griot arrives to tell a bourgeois Ouagadougou schoolboy the origin of his name, unfolding the 13th century Epic of Sundiata, in Dani Kouyate's feature debut, which sets the world of African oral tradition against the world of modern colonial-inherited schooling.

Fun fact: Kouyate comes from a family of griots himself, and the film won the Best First Film prize at FESPACO along with a Junior Prize at Cannes.

Notes: Shot in Ouagadougou, Sindou, and Ouahabou.
