Ousmane Sembene's feature debut follows Diouana, a young Senegalese woman who travels to Antibes expecting cosmopolitan work as a nanny and instead is confined to domestic servitude, and is regarded as the first feature-length film made by a Sub-Saharan African director to win international recognition.
Fun fact: At 59 minutes it won the Prix Jean Vigo and the award for Best African Director at the first Festival Mondial des Arts Negres in Dakar in 1966.
