Lingui, The Sacred Bonds

2021 — Mahamat-Saleh Haroun — Chad, France, Germany, Belgium

feature · drama · present

Set on the outskirts of N'Djamena, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's drama follows a mother confronting her fifteen year old daughter's unwanted pregnancy in a country where abortion is condemned by both religion and law, and competed in the main competition at Cannes 2021.

Fun fact: It was Haroun's first film centered on female leads in a career spanning almost thirty years, and Lingui is the Chadian word the title translates as sacred bonds.

Notes: Haroun's third feature to premiere in Cannes main competition.
