Saint Omer

2022 — Alice Diop — France, Senegal

feature · drama · present

A novelist attends the trial of a young Senegalese woman accused of killing her infant daughter in Alice Diop's fiction debut, a contemporary echo of the Medea myth that won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize and the Lion of the Future Award at Venice 2022.

Fun fact: Diop became the first Black woman director to represent France in the Best International Feature Oscar race.

Notes: Diop's first fiction feature after a career in documentary; co-written with Amrita David and Marie NDiaye.
