Med Hondo's debut feature follows an accountant who arrives in Paris pursuing his ambitions and instead encounters racial, housing, and employment discrimination, mixing animation, docudrama, and musical numbers into what critics call a landmark of political cinema, and won the Golden Leopard at Locarno in 1970.
Fun fact: The title comes from a West Indian song lamenting enslaved people taken from Dahomey, present-day Benin, to the Caribbean.
